PNG

(PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics, pronounced "ping") is a graphics format based on a lossless compression algorithm not subject to patent bitmaps. This format was developed in large part to address the weaknesses of the GIF format and can store images with a greater depth of contrast and other important information.

The motivations for creating the PNG format were generated in 1995, after the company announced it would enforce Unisys patent software LZW compression algorithm used by the GIF data (US Patent 4,558,302 and others in the rest of the world). There were other problems with the GIF format changes were desirable, for example its limitation to 8-bit palette 256 colors when computers and endured thousands or millions of colors.
Originally PNG was a recursive acronym is not meant GIF PNG (PNG's Not GIF), referring to the tradition of recursive acronym for GNU. Although GIF supports animation, PNG was developed as a static image format and MNG format was created as its animated version.
The PNG gained greater popularity in August 1999 when Unisys ended its policy of free patent license rights for developers of free or commercial software.
